Purpose & Goals of Iconic Norwich
The purpose of this website is to help educate the public about Norwich Connecticut’s rich heritage and history during the 300 year period of 1659-1959. Another important goal of this site is to provide quick access to a large collection of media (both internet based and physical “hard print”), that is focused on Norwich’s historical events, geographical features and many other tidbits. It is desired this quick access will help Norwich historians, educators and researchers explore and find media in a more efficient manner.
The media is presented using three formats, articles, trivia quizzes, and maps. Each of these formats provide several categories of events, places, people, etc. etc.
The articles provide snippets of information about an event and a link to other websites that provide detailed information about the event. We hope to peak interest, have some fun, and help users find other well established websites that provide detailed information. The goal of this website is NOT to provide an in-depth account of Norwich’s history, rather, the purpose is to provide an overview and a link to location where more information may be found.
All resources used on this website are publicly available. The “Media Library” provides a complete listing of the media used, and, where the media can be located. The Media Library may be used by historians, educators and researchers to quickly find Norwich, Connecticut history related media.
This website’s primary goal is to provide students free access to a durable repository of data about people, historic events and trivia surrounding Norwich’s past. The information can be found quickly and can be accessed easily by the general public at no cost. A secondary goal is to provide a platform for the general public to quickly and easily add to the body of knowledge.
These goals are achieved through :
1) Custom articles, and,
2) A Media Library that points to web-based media related to Norwich’s past, and,
3) Quizzes based on information found in the placemarks or Media Library.
4) The public can add to the media library and placemarks by submitting information on a form provided on this website.
The articles provide overviews of events, people, places, and historical tidbits. Every article provides at least one web-based link to more detailed information and a web-based link to an image. A text-only reference is provided when web-based links could not be found. There are three types of placemarks; Historical, Maps, and Geographical.
The Historical articles provide snippets of information about notable Norwich historical people, events, places, establishments, and other significant aspects of Norwich history. All historical placemarks have dates and specific locations associated with them.
The Map articles can be viewed by clicking on “Categories”, shown on the left. As this site matures it is expected that more categories will be added.
The Geographical articles highlight geographical features of Norwich (e.g. monuments, cemeteries, hills, bodies of water, etc. etc.). They do not have a specific dates associated with them.
The Quizzes are a collection of “tests” that are designed to make learning fun. They are organized by category, so students can choose a topic that is of interest. Each quiz is scored and provides quiz results.
It is desired that you will embrace this effort and will become an active participant in this community effort. Your help is needed to help create more articles or quiz entries. Iconic Norwich provides a framework for preservation and learning, but … there are hundreds of historical events or places that need to be added. On the left sidebar, there is a “Contribute Article” button. You are invited to contribute an article by filling out the form.
