Norwich Patents 1790-1900

The United States Patent Office first opened its doors in 1790 and Norwich residents patented more than 800 inventions, ideas, and methods during its first 110 years. Links to copies of every patent by Norwich, Greeneville, Taftville, Montville, and Bozrah residents between the years 1837-1900 are provided in the table below.

Unfortunately, most original documents for U.S. patents prior to 1837 were destroyed in the December 15, 1836 U.S. Patent Office fire. However, a brief description of the pre-1837 Norwich based patents are provided at the end of the table below.

There are many ways to search the database. One easy way is to click on the word “Category” (on the right side) , and then choose one of the categories to find patents that interest you. Then click on the word “Classification” (on the left side), and then choose a type of item. The list of Classification definitions are provided in the image below. These precise definitions help narrow your search parameters.

Alternately, simply enter a year, a key word, or a person’s name into the SEARCH box.
