In the mid to late 19th century the Commonwealth Works site housed several of Charles A. Converse’s enterprises. The area is known today as the Upper Falls Heritage Park.
It is commonly called the Flat Iron building today.
All the buildings shown are located in the Norwichtown Historic District.
When it first opened in 1873, it served as Town Hall, City Hall, County Courthouse, and police station
The Norwich Female Academy was located in the Jail Hill Historic District. Frances Manwaring Caulkins taught there. The New London County Jail House was also located on Jail Hill.
Both Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant visited William A. Buckingham there. In 1909 President William Howard Taft also visited the Buckingham home.
Ponemah Mills are located in the Taftville Historic District. Today the buildings are residential.
All of these war memorial objects can be found in the Chelsea Parade Historic District. The Uncas monument is located a couple of blocks west of Chelsea Parade, however, is a part of the district.
The Norwich State Hospital for the Insane was opened in 1904. Throughout its years of operation it housed geriatric patients, chemically dependent patients and tubercular patients. It closed in 1996.
The Norwich Bleaching, Dyeing and Printing Company was located in the Greeneville Historic District. At its peak, the company finished 60 million yards of finished goods per year.
